Dysarthria / Aphasia

Dysarthria / Aphasia

Dysarthria / Aphasia are two different types of communication disorders, both affecting a person’s ability to speak, but in different ways. Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder caused by weakness or poor control of the muscles used for speaking, such as the lips, tongue, and vocal cords. Speech may sound slurred, slow, or unclear. It is commonly seen in conditions like stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, or other neurological disorders. On the other hand, Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a person’s ability to understand, speak, read, or write. It usually occurs due to damage to the language areas of the brain, most commonly after a stroke. A person with aphasia may know what they want to say but have difficulty expressing it or understanding others. Both conditions can significantly impact communication and daily life. Diagnosis is done through detailed speech and language assessment by a specialist. Treatment mainly involves speech and language therapy. In dysarthria, therapy focuses on improving muscle strength and speech clarity. In aphasia, therapy helps rebuild language skills and improve communication strategies. With proper rehabilitation, support, and regular practice, individuals with dysarthria or aphasia can improve their communication abilities and quality of life.
